"Packs" and "Stoves"
For my pack, I can choose between an Osprey “Exos 48” or an ULA “Circuit”. I haven’t done any long distance hiking with either pack, but I have had them filled with all of my stuff and walked around quite a bit checking out how they carried the load.
Both packs seem to carry everything about the same, I never really noticed any difference in them, except for the volume of storage space in the outside pockets. I think the Osprey’s outside “side” pockets are deeper and would hold Smart Water Bottles in better. Plus the Osprey has the detachable Garage which I like for carrying things I would be needing during a day’s hike, like trail snacks, Guide Book and Maps, First-Aid Kit, and even my billfold, should I be near a town. Having things in this pocket like these, keep me from having to dig down into the pack looking for them when I stop for a break.
Of course my pack cover and rain jacket are stored outside the pack in the large netting pocket as are my camp/stream crossing shoes and water filtering items.
For my Sheltowee Trace/Benton MacKaye Trail hike, I think I’ll use the Osprey, then I’ll switch out everything into the ULA when I go up to do the “Long Trail”, which I hope to do in August with a good buddy from the Class of 2015 AT Hikers.
As far as weight, there’s just a 7 oz. difference between the two packs, the ULA weighing 2 lbs. 11 oz. and the Osprey, 2 lbs. 4 oz.
The ULA has a 68L carrying capacity and the Osprey has 51L.
For my cooking chores I switched from an alcohol stove back over to a Propane Model. I weighed all of the componets used for each type and found the alcohol stove to weigh 23.77 oz. and the Propane Stove to weigh in at 14.60 oz. The propane will produce hot water much quicker and the canisters are found just about everywhere, (hardware stores, Walmart, Outfitters). For some reason my pictures for the stoves wouldn't upload.
There are two options to make an impact in someone's life... One is by being mean, and the other is by being kind!
