Sierra High Route Map

Let the planning begin

We were going to do the JMT on the 40th anniversary of my first JMT hike. After much thought, deliberation and discussion Bob (Rascal) my CDT thru hike partner and I have decided to take on the extended Sierra High Route by combining the Sierra High Route with the Southern Sierra High Route. This thru hike of 270 miles will cover some of the more remote and beautiful areas of the Sierra. It will provide some solitude that is often lacking on thru hikes along established trails. Given the very nature of this primarily off trail trek it will provide an element of adventure that will make this a very memorable trip. And it will give the two of us jonesing hiking fools a chance to spend 35 days in the wilds doing what we love.

We talked last night about dividing up weight. I'll carry a pot we both can use. He will carry the stove. I'll carry the gas. We talked about the possibility of using an esbit stove but decided to go with the added weight of the whisperlite for a variety of reasons. We forgot to coordinate on repair and first aid kits, but there is plenty of time until we hit the trail to work out any added details.

I'm from California while Bob is from Kansas. We met 30 minutes before doing the CDT 29 years ago. Turned out to be a great partnership and we both ended up completing the CDT during that thru hike. A lot of the trail was only a concept at that point, but still we were able to meet the challengs of using crappy BLM maps in New Mexico to make our way across the state. The extended SHR will provide a challenge to our navigation skills.
