Day 3

Heather and I left Mt. Rose Campground around 7:30am and headed toward Relay Peak. If you know that Relay Peak is the highest point on the TRT, at a little over 10,300 feet, then give yourself 50 points. If you also know that going from Tahoe Meadows to Brockway Summit means that we are hiking the TRT counter clock-wise, then give yourself 5 extra credit points!

Hiking the trail counter clock-wise means that stunning Lake Tahoe is generally to your LEFT! Which, of course, means you look to your left a lot. After all, THE Lake is the whole point of the thing, right? Well, not so fast! Today, I discovered that there is a WHOLE other world over my other shoulder. The approach up to, and down from WINDY Relay Peak included great views of lake-filled valleys down the mountain to the...RIGHT. I spent the first 2 days looking left, but today, I reminded myself often, not to forget to look to the right.

About 4 miles past Relay Peak, we ditched our planned 16 mile day in favor of... wait for it.....................a 21 mile day! Why you ask? Town food, a shower, and a bed, that's why! Most long distance hikers would consider that 5 miles well spent. While studying the map, Heather and I discovered that going all the way to Brockway Summit would put us only 2 miles from Kings Beach. Done! We found out that Heather rocks at scoring rides at trailheads and a few minutes later we were at Hostel Tahoe (highly recommended) and later, a Mexican food restaurant (can't recall the name of it-but the shredded beef tacos were GREAT!).
