"DAVE, RONI FROM ISRAEL AND THE CLIFFS OF INSANITY"
Today Heather and I met several people of note...
We needed a ride back up to Brockway Summit so Heather called Daves Taxi Service. Guess who showed up? You got it... Dave. He was in his late model Tahoe SUV with his dog, and seemingly most of his earthly possessions in the back cargo area. After we finally crammed our packs in, and Dave affixed his "Dave's Taxi Service" magnet signs to the doors and finished his first cup of coffee (we think Heathers call woke him after a late night), we were off. Too bad the ride was only a few minutes cuz Dave was quite the character. Enough so that he made it into our trail conversations several times today.
After Watson Lake, one of only two water sources on this 20 mile section of trail, we met Steve. Steve is thru-hiking clockwise (I forgot to remind him to look over his LEFT shoulder every now and then) having started at our destination of Tahoe City. He was 8 miles in and seemed a little over-whelmed. Really nice guy, and we hope we see him on the other side of THE Lake.
We were right on our target of reaching Tahoe City, our halfway point and much anticipated rest/resupply point, at around 5 pm
, when...BAM!... out of nowhere, appears RONI FROM ISRAEL. If you are not part of the PCT hiking community, that name probably means absolutely nothing to you, but if you are an aspiring PCT thru-hiker like me, you would have most likely purchased and viewed (like 15 times!) Scott Herriots excellent PCT Documentary "Walk" and it's 3 sequels. Well, RONI FROM ISRAEL is one of the "trail characters" featured in Walk. So, to me, that makes him a bonafide celebrity. I recognized him immediately and acted like a star-struck gahoofus for a few minutes then recovered and the three of us had a pretty awesome 45 minute conversation. At this point you are probably thinking that RONI finally got sick of me and hiked on, but I swear, he would have stood there chatting us up for hours had we not finally said "we gotta get to TOWN!"
The rest of the way down to Tahoe City, Heather and I were jokingly "cursing" RONI FROM ISRAEL for making us miss our target of TOWN by almost an hour!
You may also be thinking that there is no description of this section of trail at all. Well, that's because this section was not very, shall we say, view-filled. It was mostly pine forest, pretty, but otherwise nondescript until we reached THUNDER CLIFF! Shortly after taking our leave from RONI, we came across it. My wonderful wife Juli will most likely punch me when she sees the pictures of Thunder Cliff, especially if I tell her I stood RIGHT on the edge and looked over!
