"TAHOE CITY - AKA 'WHAT UP BRA'/KEEP TAHOE STONED!"
Today was a "Nero" hiking day - a day where you nearly hike zero miles....
Heather and I limped into, and all around Tahoe City last night. After gimping up and down the main drag trying to find a flea bag motel, we settled on the Pepper tree, which was actually nice and the best deal we could find for 2 separate rooms.
Having checked in, we did the sorry, sore-hiker shuffle (SSHS) back to the other end of town where the dinner spot we'd scoped out earlier was... BUT, to our intense horror, they were closing just as we finally got there! What!?! Now we have to SSHS our way back to some alternative. Plan B turned out to be an alternative alright... Like, dude, an alternative universe where everyone was stoned!
"Not to be named" Pizza joint was open, but they were winding down.... All the employees seemed to be either high or were working on a beer, despite the fact that they don't sell beer there. They reminded me of the Tahoe equivalent of a group of Orange County surfer dudes! Surreal experience....
Today was a relaxing town chore kinda day, complete with the obligatory soaking of the feet in THE Lake. A couple of hours at the very cool North Tahoe Visitors Center, and a visit to a Tahoe city museum were also highlights. By 6, we were ready to escape the incoming, rather boisterous weekend crowd.
2 miles in, we are camped in a mosquito infested thicket. We exchanged one boisterous crowd for another. Both Heather and I are, as I write this, hiding in our respective shelters as the blood-thirsty, screaming mossies are still trying to get at us.
The Tahoe Rim Trail is a 165-mile long-distance hiking trail which forms a loop around Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada and Carson ranges of California and Nevada in the United States. Learn more: www.tahoerimtrail.org
