Day 8
"SOLO"
Today was a reminder that beautiful places are easy on the eyes, but hard on...feet!
Much of the trail thru the southern portion of the Desolation Wilderness is rocky, especially the area around Aloha Lake. The last 8 miles of yesterdays 24 mile day were particularly hard on Heathers feet. She was already dealing with a swollen ankle, we think due to a bite of some kind, and now her other leg has suffered an achilles injury. We got up early and limped down to Echo Lake, hit the store, then hiked on. A couple miles later, at Highway 50, Heather made the difficult but sensible decision to leave the trail.
My wonderful wife Juli agreed to come up from SLT to get her, and I continued on. I hit my stride in the late afternoon, and by the end of the day I'd put in 27 miles. I'm now camped near Freel Meadow - setting myself up for a 23 mile day tomorrow to complete the trail.
