Day 9
"DONE-BUT NOT FINISHED"
I hiked til almost dark last night, and in the fading light I picked a poor campsite. It looked more or less level, but it wasn't even close! The result, predictably, was a bad nights sleep...
I was up and on the trail by 5:30 with mixed emotions. My tired, sore feet were telling me that it was time to be done, but another part of me, the part that loves being hiker trash, wants the trail to last FOREVER! By 8am I was "in the groove" and mashing my way up toward Monument Pass, the last real climb of the hike. Shortly thereafter, I was getting water at Star Lake - only 10 miles from Kingsbury South Trailhead. As the miles ticked by, I tried to really relish the "lasts" that were occurring... The last climb, the last lake, the last trail meal, etc., etc. Then, all of a sudden, I was touching the sign that marked the beginning, and now, the end. A sense of satisfaction rose up in me. The circle of my footsteps around THE Lake, up in those high, special places, was now complete.
As I wait at the trailhead for Juli's arrival, the accomplishment (and the soreness) is already fading, but my confidence in the knowledge that I'm a HIKER is swelling!
