Cisco and Roadrunner, Rich Combs and Baerbel Steffestun, from Livermore, California, USA, are making plans to hike Te Araroa Trail in New Zealand. In 2011 we finished 1400 miles of the PCT, from Lake Tahoe to the Canadian border. This turned out to be a test run for the 1700 miles/3000km of Te Araroa. What was originally a plan to view the total eclipse of the sun visible from Cairns in Australia, with a side trip to do a little hiking in New Zealand, has grown into a full blown thru hike. Our goal is enjoyment, seeing and experiencing New Zealand, but what better way then to walk the length of it. Airline reservations are made, equipment being evaluated and re-evaluted, but we will only know what to expect after we start hiking. That's excitement!
Note that when we start the trip, all distances will be in kilometers. Multiply km by .62 to get miles if you still use the antiquated American system of measurement....like me.
We leave for Australia Nov 10th and arrive Nov 12th. Nov 11 is lost at the international dateline, so if your birthday is Nov 11, like Baerbel's brother, you'll be a year younger this time around! The eclipse is the morning of Nov 14, then we return to Auckland Nov 16, and hope to be on the trail starting at Cape Reinga no later than Nov 20. Cell coverage will likely be poor, and we know from the PCT that at the end of the day you just have energy to eat and sleep, but we'll provide updates as often as possible. See the SPOT entry in this journal for another way to track us.
