We first heard about Te Araroa while spending 10 weeks in New Zealand in 2005. During that trip we hiked the Kepler Track, The Routeburn Track and 5 Pass Route, the NW Circuit on Stewart Island, The Abel Tasman Track and the Round Ruapehu Track. We also visited friends and relations in Christchurch and Auckland and enjoyed touring by rental car up the west coast of the south island and to the Coromandel peninsula on the north island. We thought we might hike Te Araroa in 2008/9 but ended up hiking the Colorado section of the Continental Divide Trail and going to the UK during that time.
About a year ago we decided we would plan to hike Te Araroa in 2017/18. Back in July we booked plane tickets to fly to and from Auckland. Today I have ordered YHA memberships and DOC hut passes and I've just read that the maps on the Te Araroa website have been updated for the upcoming season. So soon I will be busy printing the maps. We will also get them transferred to our tablet for a backup. We are also making arrangements for people to check on the house and clear the snow while we are away. We hope we will not encounter much new snow fall on our hike!
Alistair And Gail Hike Te Araroa
Te Araroa is a 3000-km trail stretching from Cape Reinga in the North of New Zealand to Bluff in the South. Down the coastline, through the forest, across farmland, over volcanoes and mountain passes, along river valleys, and on green pathways through seven cities. Learn more: www.teararoa.org.nz
