Ta days 12-16

Day 12 Wednesday 25th

Beautiful morning, after a few calls home

We were straight into the Beach at 0730, again we had the whole thing to ourselves.

Had our 2nd breakfast in Waipu salt’n pepper, they made us sone great hot cooked food. Road walk out of town past the céad míle fáilte sign then up hill to a forest walk. It’s a circular walk away from the coast, without actually getting very far south..!

But we did see some amazing houses.

Pass a couple on a tight coastal track

Then as we drop to the beach 2 Kiwi’s having a rest ( one very chatty about how far we going how far we been today how we fairing for injuries! He also said it’s great the track opened today! )We did not know it was closed.. I thought that closure was further south..

Back on to the beach again chatting to a few couples out walking, it’s the most people we have seen on a beach so far.

Roads and beautiful garden coastal walk into Mangawhai heads.

Pizza & beer from wood street freehouse we were the only ones there at 1600. 2 Canadian, 2/3 USA working there. We were Beer/pizza happy. Slight Tipsy road walk to Mangawhai, but we had a pavement or good verge. The 2 kiwis we saw came up

Behind we thought they were ahead after our pizza stop. Chatted about campground 1.4km ahead but we never got there, we met

Alan (he teaches music & invited us into his place across the road from the store..

We had a Chat, beer, bed.

Day 13 Thursday 26th

Left Alan’s house @ 0610

Cars were driving very fast on dusty road( think they are late for work) walked along Te aria beach walk, smoke billowing on to beach from an area up from-us that had lots of noisy diggers working on it.

No one to be see, except a pod of maybe 7

Dolphins playing as we walked south to a

Holiday park. Couple from Vancouver just leaving as we arrived, purchased crisps & cold drinks. More road walk to a tough forest section. The rest of the day felt tough.

Chat to the couple again at their camp 3 km b4 we picked ours.

Tent up, in a tight spot, dinner, tired.

V noise bird keeping us awake.

Day 14 Friday 27th

Track & muddy trail this morning

Up across and down to Dome cafe where we ate 2nd breakfast of chips & bagels.

Roads, tracks then the Rain started. Chatting on the road and missed our left turn, lost 25 min, more wet fields and tracks the rain got heavier, and the mud became much slicker, slippery & slimy. Missed signs and ended up Wrong side of fence so back track, then did it again Chimp zaps himself, looks like everyone else done same

Lost another 40 minutes.

Canadians caught up and he slipped on

A Wet Greasy grassy track

Back on a road so we took off trying to get some KM behind us. Foot bridge & nice track to puhoi. Into the Old pub hotel stables, lots of Locals drinking as it’s Friday and they have obviously finish work.

2 other hikers there, they are staying there

We are already wet so

Continue on the road to Waiwera, it’s too late to canoe this section, and we need to move to stay warm. More rain, SH1 was not too bad, Made it to Owera

Skipped the first motel even hiker trash can have limits. But staying in one not much better.

Out for pizza, back for a shower then sleep. Put my ear plugs in as the road is noisy.

Day 15 Saturday 28th

Looks like rain again today, path to a bike track around Silverdale that had lots of runners out on it , it was a very nice river walk, More roads back into country side, now is it going to rain or not ? Ponchos on rain pants on!?

Down to Stillwater, no one at the campsite but it looked like a nice place to stay. Into the Reserve which was a nice walk, wet feet but that’s the norm. Pass a cottage then we took high tide route, chat to a local guy starting the TA next month. It was a really Beautiful forest, nice path & lots of people out. As we Road walk back to rejoin the trail the sun was trying to come out. In the town of Torbay we stopped for a drink then on to Browns bay for chips & beer. Back on roads, paths and coast where we have cool

views of all the houses.. we stay thinking about where to camp/sleep but there No accommodation as the auckland marathon is on in the morning, decide we will have to walk to Davenport or slept under a tree but I find a b&b. We detour to find it, cool it’s available, dump stuff, grabbed some more food, back for a shower, finally feel clean Decide on our plans for the morning on how best to take part in the marathon.

Day 16 Sunday 29th

Up early ate and left b&b, we quickly

Find ourselves Against the flow of the marathon, just as we think

All The runners have passed The 1/2 marathon elite arrive, then hundreds of runners. Some are already walking it’s only 4km in. We start shouting out the names of the runners, they look amazed as they obviously have forgotten their names are printed on their shirts. Then unbelievably the guy we are planning on hooking up

With later stoops in front of us and calls out chimps name. Yes he was running he 1/2 M

Finally the trail moves away from the race, past quiet roads & beaches to emerge at the ferry..grabbed a coffee as we have a 25min

Wait. Walk down through the CBD, through a few gardens, parks, college & green areas. It’s all very quiet. Bought lunch to carry & eat at a suitable spot. We have been dawdling so far today so start proper hiking just as the sun finally comes out, then it’s suddenly hot. Nice coastal walk fields of sheep can’t believe we are so close to the centre of Auckland at times, by the water treatment works we decide to stop for lunch, not the best but we were hungry. It was very good lunch, then one final push to get to the airport. All costal with views back to the city.

Pass a small field of Avocados

About 3.6 km from the Airport a car pulls up with Denis in, after running this morning he drove out to pick us up so we don’t have to get the bus back into town, we feel bad for asking him to wait by McDonald’s as we want to walk the full section so we can get the bus back when we re start hiking after a zero tomorrow.

3 cold refills later he drives us to his house ( his wife does not know he is being more hikers home, but we promise we are not staying) we did some Online stuff, but can’t solve our slight technical issues.. then he insists on dropping us back to town where we had accommodation booked for 2 nights. Again drop Stuff, and go out for hot vegan food. Lord of the fries. Grab a Drink in a nearby bar, then return to have shower.

Can’t believe we are back in Auckland

627km done
