Heading out from Rebecca Mountain

I've been planning to hike both the Alabama and Georgia sections of the Pinhoti trail for several months and finally set January 5th as a start date. Marie drove me down to mom and Rick's on January 4th and the next morning they took me to Blister Bob's house in Lineville, AL. Bob shuttled me to the southernmost trailhead (Rebecca Mt) that is dirt trail. Flagg Mt. is the official southern terminus of the Pinhoti but there is a 20+ mile roadwalk from Flagg to Rebecca Mt that I opted not to do. From Rebecca Mt to the Jackson Chapel trailhead in GA the Pinhoti is all dirt trail.

Bob dropped me off at the trailhead at 9:00 AM sharp. As I stepped onto the trail I was greeted by a sign that said "Bull's Gap 11.2 Miles". The trail is relatively new and there isn't a defined tread through this section but it was easy enough to follow because it was well blazed. The terrain was easy walking though pines with a gradual climb to the top of Rebecca Mt. In the first hour I met a deer hunter who was worried that I didn't have on any blaze orange. As we parted ways he asked me to wait a second and he walked over to the toolbox on his truck and pulled out an orange vest and told me he'd hate to hear that I got shot. I thanked him and was grateful because there was regular gunfire on all sides of me. That orange vest turned out to be incredibly useful for visibility on the road walks and made me feel a bit safer..

I had a nice lunch at a communication tower 2 hours in and I arrived at Bull's Gap at 2:00 PM. Bob had recommended stashing water here and we had dropped off 3 quarts. It started raining about an hour into this section - one of those steady drizzles that is just light enough to make you procrastinate putting on rain gear but heavy enough to eventually get you wet.. AL is on CST so I was 1 hour behind my normal timezone. I got 8 miles in from the Bull's Gap trailhead whenI stopped. made camp and settled in for the night.
