Border Monument
Northbound on the Arizona Trail
My good friends Chris and Jeri gave me a ride from the Tucson airport, to Sierra Vista and then up the steep road to Montezuma Pass.
I hiked south for nearly two miles along good trail, descending to the monument marking the border and the beginning of the Arizona Trail. This is it!
Half way back I saw a hiker hustling the opposite way down the trail, obviously a thru-hiker. She was Bright Eyes, veteran of the AT. She also hiked the north half of the AZT last year.
It was windy and I walked northbound and uphill until I found a good camp spot mostly out of the wind.
Bright Eyes camped at the same spot. There was an amazing deep red sunset and incredible stars. It was exciting to be back on the trail.
Click on the Arizona Trail map link to the left to see a map of the trail, and my current location, in this case my starting position at the extreme southern end.
