Plans for the CDT this year
I am planning on hiking the CDT southbound (SOBO) this year. I was planning to do this hike last year but COVID seemed to have other plans for me and I decided to take the advice of the trail organizations and postpone the trip.
I have hiked most of the CDT, from Mexico to Yellowstone, a few years ago but had to get off the trail due to an injury. Hoping to finish the parts I have not done and I may continue hiking the rest of the trail after that. We will see, I am leaving my exact plans open and will decide exactly how much of the trail I will be doing every day I'm out there.
I will be doing a few things different gear wise. Mostly I will be using a canister stove instead of an alcohol stove and will be using different traction devices on my feet as I was unhappy with the last ones I used. Thinking of trying the black Diamond distance ones as they are lighter than many others. But I'll be checking the snow levels before I go, if things melt really fast this year maybe I be able to skip them altogether.
I will also be doing all my resupply, except one, from the trail. I plan to mail a package to Benchmark Ranch before I leave Florida but will do all the others from towns along the trail.
I already have purchased a ticket to the trail. I will be flying into Spokane and then taking Amtrak to East Glacier and then will be heading to the trail head from there - probably a hitch. Not sure where I will be starting at - Watertown or Chief Mtn. I propably will decide the start location the day I get to Glacier. It will depend on snow conditions and where is easier to get a ride to.
Looking forward to getting back out to the wilderness but my now being a Florida resident means I will not have climbed a hill in quite a while and will be paying for that the first few weeks of the hike. I will probably take the first few weeks a bit slower to help aclimate to both the hills and altitude as I currently spend most of my time at about 10 feet above sea level and the biggest hill I have around here is a bridge I occassionally ride my bike over.
Hope you enjoy following along. I will probably post an update or two before heading out and will attempt to post everyday from the trail.
