Plans for the Trail

This journal is a bit different from my others in that it is not a hiking journal but a biking journal. I decided since all my other trip journals are on this site I would do this one too. So if you are a hiking purist this journal may not be for you.

The plan is for me and my friend Cliff to bicycle the East Coast Greenway Trail the whole way from Maine to Key West Florida. We will be starting in mid August and the trip should be a bit under two months. The plan is to camp along the way with the occasional motel or hostel stay thrown in along the way.

I have put together my gear which is mostly the same gear I hike with with the addition of a bicycle and some gear for that. I am planning on going pretty light weight for the gear and should not really have to carry much food as we should be passing store pretty regularly along the way. Hoping to tent out most nights and probably cook most meals myself, although I am sure I will be hitting the resturants a bit more than when hiking because they will be much more accessable.

I expect this trip to be a lot different than the hiking trips I am used to so I am looking forward to finding out what those differences are going to be. I have never done a long bike trip before and an starting out on a long one but then again I had never done a really long hike before doing the AT so I guess I am just a jump in an try it kind of person.

I have picked up a new bike for this as the one I had before wasn't really suitable for long distance touring and was just a bang around beater that would have needed a complete overhaul to make servicable.

Like my other journals I will try to update this one daily throughout the trip. I need to start training a bit more before the start of this one so I can hit the trail is some sort of shape.

While we are doing the East Coast Greenway Trail (ECGT) for the most part we are planing to take a couple of alternate routes along the way if they seem like a better route. So some of the trip we might follow the American Cycling east coast route for some sections if we feel they would be more fun/interesting. For example we are thinking of riding the outer banks in North Carolina.

We I probably won't do a lot of updates until the trip is about to start so check back here in early August. We both already have our plane/bus tickets to Bangor, ME and sort of have a plan to get us to the start at the Canadian Boarder at Calias ME.
