Great Divide Route Map

Plans for the Trip

I am planning on riding my bike through the Rocky Mountains. I will be starting in Banff, Canada and will ride through BC, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico.

This ride is along an established bike route that mostly is on dirt roads, with a little bit of trail. The route follows the Continetal Divide and is the longest off-pavement cycling route in the world. I has a distance of around 3000 miles total. I will be heading South and starting in mid June with the plan to be done in a couple of months. A lot of that will depend on the trail conditions and how well my body holds out. I will be camping most of the way. The entire route is basically dirt-road and mountain-pass riding every day. In total, it has over 200,000 feet of elevation gain. Nearly 2,100 miles of the route is composed of county, Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and Canadian provincial unpaved roads. The remainder is 60 miles of singletrack trails and 950 miles of paved roads including close to 50 miles of paved bike paths.

I have a lot of things to get ready yet as I have to make a few modifications to my bike to handle the conditions a bit better. I'm adding some suspension items to save my hands and butt from the jarring. On my last bike trip, which was mostly road, I had a lot of numbness in my hands from riding so much. I am hoping to avoid a lot of that this time but the conditions are going to be harder on the hands.

I haven't really done much planning yet but will get to that over the next few weeks.
