The mighty Shenandoah

The Longest Blueblaze

This morning i sit on the lawn of storer college waiting for the ATC to open. I am sad to leave the trail, and yet I don't know why. Its not like I'm saying goodbye to any long-term hiking partners or "trail family". I will still be close to the wilderness at my new job.

And yet there it is, that ache in the heart that comes when I leave something that I love. My one consolation, realized this morning as I stepped from the white blazed AT onto the blue blazed side trail: I am a blue-blazer. And for a blue-blazer, it is all trail, whether following the white blazes or hiking an alternate route or wandering down a dirt road. So even now, as i head across the continent to the northern cascades;im not leaving the Appalachian Trail, I'm just taking an alternate route. A really long blue blaze.

Appalachian Adventure

The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) is more than 2,175-mile long footpath stretching through 14 eastern states from Maine to Georgia. Conceived in 1921 and first completed in 1937, it traverses the wild, scenic, wooded, pastoral, and culturally significant lands of the Appalachian Mountains. Learn more: www.appalachiantrail.org
