Flip-Flop Hike Is On Hold

My “Flip-Flop” hike which was scheduled to begin right after a “Festival” of the same name in Harpers Ferry, W. Va., has been temporarily placed on hold pending the outcome of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

ATC has “advised” hikers to abort their hike for this year, or at least wait and see if there may be an alternative method of completing a hike as we see how this new virus strain will play out.

Folks along the trail route are just as much affected by this decision as are the hikers wanting to traverse the trail’s length, but at the same time, they are abiding by the orders handed down by their state and National leaders.

Just like at home, restaurants along the trail are only opened for Take-Out food. Hostels and Motels are being closed and like at home, groceries along the trail are experiencing problems of getting their shipments in for restocking.

I’ve read where First Responders may be reluctant of having to rescue a hiker when their services may be stretched pretty thin taking care of the folks in their region should there be a need.

Beginning a hike with the confusion that surrounds us, in my opinion, is not a good idea. Who’s to say there will be ample food for resupply or a place to stay when in town to get groceries, do laundry, eat regular food or to just rest up for a day or two. Who’s to say there will be shuttle drivers willing to come pick you up or drop you off trailside when these town visits become necessary.

To me the trail is challenging enough without adding all of these unknowns.

I’ll monitor COVID-19 from here and if I see a major improvement along the trail’s route, there’s a big chance I’ll go Take-A-Hike!
