Looking forward to trying again next year when the conditions might be a little less treacherous. A few things that I want to say in retrospect about this year’s hike. When I originally decided to do the JMT I had planned on doing it solo but with the conditions being as bad as they were this winter I jumped at the opportunity to join up with someone else. The opportunity popped up so quickly that I didn’t really have time to get to know the person I would be hiking with. I answered a posting on the John Muir Trail group site on Yahoo saying they had a permit for 3 leaving from Tuolumne Meadows on July 12th and that one person had dropped out. The problem with all this is that I was then committed to hiking to a schedule with someone I didn’t know. I had expressed a concern about how aggressive the pace was early on in the itinerary before we had a chance to acclimate to the attitude. I was right to be concerned.
Next year:
· I need to have control of the schedule
· If I hike with someone else we need to have at least 1 overnight training hike
· I need to go lighter still. My total packed weight was 42 lbs. (Goal for next year is 37 lbs.)
· Make sure I know how to use the Spot Connect device better. Not all my posts were received not sure if it was user error or not.
· I need to spend more time conditioning
