A pika in the open. Rare.
Backtracking
It is a little weird to know the trail that I am hiking. Backtracking the trail from yesterday, I know what to expect. I know where the climbs are and where the water is. The weather is cold, and I think that the pika are getting braver as one was foraging for grass in the open at Hopkins Pass even though it knew I was there. I saw the two members of Disreali Gears who made it through the Sierra and were only about 6 miles from Canada. They looked really tired. I also met The Graduate for the first time. He left the Mexican border May 13th and had the smallest pack that I had seen so far on the trail. He told me that his base weight was sub 5 lbs. That is known as Super Ultra Light or SUL. I met a few short trippers on the way back.
