Recently, it has come to my attention that my journal is incomplete. Some have noted that Mr. Cody "mysteriously" became a service dog sometime during the six years it took us to complete our PCT hike. In reality there is nothing mysterious about it. We adopted Mr. C with the intention of training him to be certified as an assistance dog. As with any well-trained animal, this does not happen over night and Mr. Cody was no different, he was two years old before he met the requirements. I neglected to include this in my PCT journal originally because to me it was not relevant to our incredible journey. In hindsight, I realize this was naive.
Many people, even those with beloved dogs, think there is no place for dogs on a long distance hike. I agree, many dogs, like many people do not belong on a long distance hike, but many do, and Mr. C., as well as many others like him, thrive on a long distance trail. Just remember, your dog, like a child, is a true innocent, and if you hike with one, make sure the dog comes first.
The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a 2,650-mile national scenic trail that runs from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington. The PCT traverses 24 national forests, 37 wilderness areas and 7 national parks. The PCT passes through 6 out of 7 of North Americas ecozones. Learn more: www.pcta.org
