Picking Up Some Loose Ends
In a few days, I'm heading out to pick up about half of the miles missed in 2010. Propane Jane and I will start with a climb of Mt Whitney, which I missed last time. She'll then drop me at the trailhead where I can climb up and over Kearsarge Pass then head north. I hope to get to Sierra City, perhaps a bit farther. I plan to hike alone, or with others if it works out. Mostly, I'll probably be alone--believe it or not, I can be very shy.
This trip will be more relaxed since I have no goal. I want to enjoy the Sierras, stop and smell the flowers... I doubt that I'll be posting much, though if I get connectivity, I'll post. I'm hoping that Fred can pick me up either in Sierra City or beyond, in later August. Then we'll head home, I'll clean up, re-pack, and head out with Propane Jane and friends for a Thorofare backpack trip.
My big concerns right now are weeding stuff out, figuring out how much food I need to carry and fitting it into the bear cannister (yuck, extra pounds in that cannister).
Same tent (Henry Shires Rainbow), same pack (Granite Gear Vapor Ki), same sleeping bag (Mont-Bell), a new stove--smaller for space considerations. I would like a new sleeping bag--this one seems to attract moisture, but no time to shop and no desire to spend more money!
The new knee is good--it will hurt at times, but hey, it's strong. The old knee will sport a new brace. The feet will tread on re-tooled orthotics and I'll wear very light weight Altra shoes. OK, wish me luck!
