HOME !
Again I went to sleep Friday evening before the sun had gone down and woke up around 6:30 to a glorious shining sun. It was warm in my tent, and I packed up. I kept the tent set up to completely dry out as there was dew on it. I made a breakfast of oatmeal, shelf ready bacon and some kind of dehydrated fruit, I think watermelon. There were also dried blueberries in the oatmeal. The coffee was nasty - that weak, midwest version. I knitted for awhile and then finished packing, stuffing my tent into the trunk of the car so that I could put it on my clothesline at home.
I drove to McDonald's in John Day for a nice cup of coffee and sat and knitted until after 10. Then I went to Skeins. I asked the owner what had happened about 5 miles down 395 yesterday afternoon. When I drove by there were four vehicles - two on each side of the highway on the shoulders and about 10 young people, several of which were helping someone into the back of a pick up. Right after that three emergency responders came up the road, sirens blaring, and then an ambulance. She said a car had gone over the cliff and into the water, allegedly avoiding a deer. I couldn't see the car from the road, although the drop into the water didn't appear to be that far, but I guess looks can be deceiving. The owner lives in Seneca, which is down 395 about 20 miles from JD> She saw the car on the back of a wrecker later that afternoon.
I looked around and settled on two skeins of hand-dyed by the owner sock yarn and then got a brochure on the Fibre Festival in Canby next month. Before heading home, I stopped to top off the gas tank, not wanting to run out of gas.
I took my time driving home, pulling over so those in a hurry could pass. Good thing I didn't get as far as Battle Mountain to camp because there's not camping! It's just a picnic site.
I arrived home shortly after 2 pm and both Venus and Pandora were happy to see me. I also met the two new kittens, who apparently appeared yesterday. My neighbors had been feeding my cats and thought that Puffy wasn't getting enough food, so they were feeding her on their deck. I guess the word went out that they had food available for hungry cats. I couldn't find Puffy when I first got home., but than around 6 I went looking for her and she was on their deck waiting for her food! I picked her up and brought her back to my house, preparing a special meal just for her. They told me that she liked their cat food, so I'm going to pick up a small bag today and see if that makes a difference. I can't believe that she took matters into her own paws and played the feel sorry for me, I'm a 19-year old, blind, hearing impaired cat, with a brain tumor and kidney disease, who still wants to live and likes to eat.
I juiced up the grapefruit that was left over from my trip and made some mean Salty Dogs.
Now, I need to decide what to do next.
Retired And Back On The Trail
"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, Guinness in one hand, steak in the other, yell 'Holy Sh**, What a Ride!"
