Somewhere On The Trail

Introduction

I retired from medical practice on 30 December 2013. In April of this year I plan to start my hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. The trail runs from Mexico to Canada covering some 2660 miles. It will take roughly 5 1/2 months to complete. The first 700 miles of the trail runs through arid desert terrain. Then the trail moves into alpine territory in the high Sierras where snow and ice conditions prevail. Along the way there will probably be bears, blisters, storms, intense heat, extreme cold, river crossing's, and other exciting adventures. What makes an otherwise rational guy want to subject himself to all of this? Well, now we are talking philosophy or religion. I will just say that the reason I want to attempt this is in my credo-"The journey is the reward" and let it go with that.

As is the tradition for many long distance hikers my trail name is SlowBro. Garnered many, many years ago while adventuring with my life long friends, Pete and Frank. I will expand on this in a future blog, but suffice it to say that we became known as the Slow Brothers at the time and the name stuck.

So, my hope is to start the PCT on April 19 (Editor's Note: Changed to April 5th see entry on 2/4/14) and complete my trek by late September or early October. It will require that I hike roughly 20 miles every day. So this is not a trip for the faint of heart. Every year several hundred people attempt this trail and some of them even finish it. I hope to be one of those. But in the end, whether I last six days or six months, having attempted it is what matters the most to me.

Over the next few months I will blog a little about my preparation and my thoughts. Once on the trail I am hopeful that I will be able to send some missives back to the blog for posting.

Let the adventure begin!

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." -Mark Twain
