Oregon Desert Trail Map

Day 16 On the Fremont NRT

I got an early start on the climb to Morgan Butte. The Fremont National Recreation Trail is a well made, moderately graded trail. The few blow downs didn't prevent me from making 7.5 miles before my first break. I sat down for my second break just beyond the Morgan Butte Lookout where I discovered that I had cell coverage. Among the spam, I had a email from VW, a thru-hiker who is a couple of weeks ahead of me. He hitched around Steens Mountain because of lingering snow. I hope it melts before I get there. I appreciate his warning. He doesn't know me but he took the time to let me know of the upcoming challenge. I also got some sad news from a friend. His sister died suddenly in her sleep at age 49. We never know how long we have, so we have to make the best of life now.

I continued down the ridge to the south of the lookout and collected water at Round Mountion spring. Then I dropped off of the west side of the fridge to camp at WB096. There was a large structure near my camp that was made of small sticks. It was about six feet in diameter and four feet tall. I am guessing it was a pack rat's home. Everything inside the tent tonight.
