Lake Winnipesaukee from Mt Major

Time to Get Ready

It's time to get back out on a long hike! I can't wait. After completing the CDT and Tripple Crown in 2011 I took a summer off from thru-hiking and went back to join the camp staff at Hidden Valley Scout Camp, my 9th summer at camp. It was a great time on the Adventure Staff once again running the Valley Voyageurs program. With my phenominal co-leader we took high school age scouts on 5 day long backpacking trips for 8 weeks in a row after 2 weeks of staff training. The kids plan the route and lead the trip. We follow. The make wrong turns and we follow. Along the way we teach leave no trace ethics and low impact hiking & camping. We ask that the include at least one place with no trail to use map and compass skills. Then there is a day of rock climbing at a remote cliff site using the knots and commands we have taught while hiking. The last day usually includes a kayak trip across 2 lakes back to main camp. For we staff, it is kind of like an 8 week thru-hike without any hitchhiking and without actually getting anywhere.

This summer, after the GET, I will return to camp and the Valley Voyageurs. The hikes have always stayed in the Belknap Range to the south of Lake Winnipesaukee. This summer we will stay in the Belknaps on odd numbered weeks and expand north into the White Mountains on even numbered weeks. I want to inaugurate that new aspect.
