Journal Entry

4-19

Tent Site past Trimpi to Mt Rogers Hqtrs.

526.8 to 533.7 for 6.9 miles

I woke at 6:30 and was going by 7:30. The trail was moist from some brief overnight rain. I climbed to a ridge line that exposed me to more wind, but it wasn’t as bad as the wind at Grayson Highlands and Mt Rogers. Eventually there was some sun and I felt fortunate to have decent weather on my last day.

I came to the Mt Rogers shelter that had a shower and flush toilets. It was nicer than the Fontana Hilton and less crowded! At the visitors center I learned that the next shuttle wasn’t until 11:15 so I hitched a ride with Marky who was slack packing with a friend. It was a cold and windy walk to the Subway where I inhaled a footlong.

I’m both glad to be done and sad to leave. One of these days I’ll do a long trail start to finish!

Many of you asked about my trail name. Steamboat named me Slinky since I’m wiry and just keep going under my own momentum even when I’m eating!
