Pacific Crest Trail Map

From Redding to PDX

I can't believe it's over; all the miles in WA + OR pre-trip, the section hike south from Willamette, + now I'm shut down hard with a waterborne pathogen + its miseries. I spent 3 nights at the Heitmans' place in Old Station, trying to recover; but just got worse instead. Cowlifornia hates me; no amount of chlorine will change my mind, but still so sad about ending early due to debilitating weakness from zero calorie absorption + dehydration for a week. Gracious ride to Redding from Firefly, sharing stories along the way, + then the midnight ride of gloom on Greyhound to get home + see a Dr. Thank you, Firefly! Shared big chunk of my resupply with Sage, still going strong SoBo; also saw Fireweed on the bridge at Burney Falls, so still a few out + about in section N. Hat Creek Rim was dramatic, due to the windy conditions + recent fire damage, though signage sorely lacking for SoBos in the cattle-infested center of the plateau, where cattle-trails veer in similar directions. An especially irksome one was flagged, + proved a backtracking pain-in-the-arse for the hapless SoBo. All NoBo tracks obliterated. Screamed at the hooved-locusts during the crazed windstorm at day's-end, halflight of dusk streaming through errant cracks in the cloud cover. Yeah, idiotic, but it felt good + cathartic after a week's worth of sickness + scary weightloss on trail. Still haven't finished the PCT; will have to wait till next year to knock off the final 300+ miles remaining. Damn. It's over for now. Transition time. Will likely hike like a freak when recovered, just to be paying trail-penance while home + away from the PCT. Mushroom-season is on now, anyway; + the cow-free wilderness areas of the NW will be a joy to travel through during this season, dripping with thawed overripe huckleberries on the bush. Maybe it's good to be home.
