The Group at the Border Im On Top of the Monument

Last Day - 3 Miles to the Border

I awoke to gentle rain pelting my tent. I didn't hear anyone else stirring in our camp so I rested warmly in my sleeping bag. There were 8 of us in this camp and we had a nice camp fire last night and talked about how excited we were to be finishing the trail. The rain stopped and I thought again how lucky I was that the weather had been relatively nice since we left Stehekin. As I was in my bag I finally decided to start packing up for the 3 mile walk to the border and then the additional 8 miles to Manning Park. I noticed that the fly of my tent was sagging onto the screen of the tent so I unzipped the door and poked my head outside. The reason that the rain had stopped pelting my tent was that the rain had turned to snow. There was a dusting of snow all around but the temperature wasn't too cold, about 30 deg. We all were pretty stoked and quickly got our packs loaded and were on hiking to our final destination. The last few miles into Manning Park gave our legs a final 1000 ft climb which we all handled with ease due to adrenalin and the strength we had built thousands of trail miles leading up to this moment. I got to the lodge at Manning Park and exchanged my driver's license and $ 5 for the key to the shower/hot tub/swimming pool. The feeling of finishing the trail and sitting in a hot tube is hard to describe but I was very happy and relieved. We had lunch in the restaurant and a couple of fellow hikers said that they would take me to their place for the night and help me book a flight home. Wow!
