Pacific Crest Trail Map

Oh the Memories

It's hard to believe that one year ago today that Walkin' Cowboy and me were here at Lake Morena with our sights on Canada. I was able to make it all the way to Canada although I missed a couple of segments due to the Fires. Hopefully the class of 2009 won't have this problem, although it is inevitable that some problems occur.

Other journalists have taken the time to thoughtfully reflect on their journey and list some lessons learned and provided advice to future hikers. I've admired their words and thought I'd like to do the same. But every time I've come here with that intent I've backed off. I finally figured it out -- I remember a conversation with IPOD just south of Carson Pass -- he told me that he could never seem to wrap up his journal or organize his photos. He said that he thought it was because he didn't want the journey to end and that somehow ending his journal meant it was over. Me too I guess. But, at the same time I know now that the PCT hike will always be a part of me. My friend Tailwinds recently wrote how she found some of the trail lessons slipping away -- me too. But, I find that even heading out for a long day or weekend calls up the important things. I remember the wonderful people I met -- Tailwinds, Tahoe Mike, Nell, Dandy, Blue Butterfly, One Step, Lime green Jellybean, and on and on. I am grateful for everyone who rooted for me and sent me food or good wishes -- my spouse, my dog, Linda the K, Margie, Marion, Lisa, Bob, Bill and on and on. I'm also thankful that years ago I had a good surgeon that repaired my blown out knee so well that I was physically able to do this. So, to be corny, I refuse to say goodbye to the PCT and everything the journey was and is. In some ways I refuse to let the journey end, I'll always be on the Trail.
