2016 PCT Permit
Permits
Okay - now have all required permits. My PCT permit arrived today. I have my Canadian entry permit and California fire permit also.
I have 99% of my equipment. Still waiting on my sleep pad and a few articles of clothing. When these arrive I will do a complete weigh-in and begin paring down. My current base weight (calculated) is just under 14 lbs.
Did a 16 mile pracice hike (with my training pack loaded to about 25 lbs) this week. Plan is to work up to 20 miles. Also tested my SPOT Gen 3 though not in tracking mode. Just pressed the "I'm OK" button four times during the hike. Next time I'm out will try tracking.
Not much else to do but train. My current plan:
Segment 1: Camp to Agua Dulce (4/24 to 6/1)
Intermission: Leave trail for three weeks to take my brother John to Mexico to celebrate his cancer victory (I promised!). I will skip the section from Agua Dulce to Independance (I did this 350 mile section hike last year to get a feel for thru-hiking).
Segment 2: Independence to Ashland (6/24 to 8/15)
Segment 3: Ashland to Canada (8/16 to 10/5)
No break between segments 2 and 3, just broke it up because it makes the files easier to handle on Craigs PCT planner. I have my flight into San Diego and out of LA. I still have to schedule my flight back. Here is the plan. Looks like Southwest is the best option.
§ IAH to REN (arrive by noon 6/23 - Thu)
§ Catch Eastern Sierra (Lone Pine/Reno Route) bus at Reno airport 1:30 PM (ONLY runs Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri).
§ Arrive in Independence around 7:30 PM on Thurs 6/23
§ Get a hotel Thursday night in Independence
§ Friday morning (6/24) get to the trail (somehow!)
