Day 1

Slept in the car at Two Harbors trailhead last night after getting in around 10:30. Had a terrible storm on drive up from twin cities. The shuttle ride up to the north end went quickly and I had a good conversation with my driver, Larry. I was dropped off at 9:45 and walk the 1.3 miles to the actual northern terminus at 270 degrees overlook. Could see into Canada. By 10:30 I was walking south. Saw a handful of day hikers in the beginning but then no one until I reached camp. I ended up wearing leggings all day because the bugs were terrible and there was lots of tall grass to walk through at the start of the day. The trail got better; bugs not so much. There were a couple clear views to the lake but not much. Went over the tallest point in the trail at a whopping 1829 ft! Haha. Pushed past the campsite I had planned on because the shuttle got me started much earlier than I thought it would. Plus I couldn't find the water there. I'm camped with a couple from Duluth who is finished up their last section of trail. They've been all over the world - backpacked in Nepal, Ecuador, Bolivia, Vietnam, Canada, etc. It was fun to hang out with them especially since I finished hiking early in the afternoon (3pm). They made a fire and we shared a bear bag hang. It's almost ten now and it's not even totally dark yet. The couple, Laura and Phil, told me there's a good chance I could see the northern lights on a clear night up here. That'd be so cool. I wish I had brought my puffy. It's a little chilly plus I could use it as a pillow! Need to remember that next time. Really glad I brought both pairs of leggings. I hate the bra I have, like all I've tried. May try braless. Happy to be out in the woods. It's been pretty but not spectacular scenery but Laura and Phil said the trail only gets better going south so looking forward to that.
