More Stuff
I had a fun planning day yesterday. Got my pack--an Osprey Aura 50, and so have put a stake in the ground on planned weight! I want to do this at 25lbs or less and its looks like I have to now! I am also trying a new pair of boots. I've had just a horrible time with trail shoes and runners. I must have weird-shaped feet because I get odd pressure points. So, I decided to spring for some good socks, hiking weight, merino wool and a pair of Ahnu boots. I'm going to use them for my day-hikes in the hills behind my house, so we'll see.
On the interesting side, I've decided to use this hike to raise funds for the National Keratoconus Foundation. My middle son has Keratoconus, which is a degenrative eye disease that hits young adults--he was 19 when diagnosed--and can result in complete blindness. He went from perfect vision to near blindness in his right eye in three months. It's devastating and not very widely known. Treatments are limited.
Earlier this week, I contacted the head of fundraising for NKCF and explained my plans. She was delighted and I will be wearing NKCF branded items on my hike, taking picures dna posting to an online journal and blog. I'll also be raising money for NKCF research as I hike.
