Sierra Mountains, CA

Arrived in Kennedy Meadows on Tuesday, 6/2, after a 130 mile stretch of the Mojave Desert. Kennedy Meadows is known as the ???Gateway to Sierra???s???. We spent Tuesday night in Kennedy meadows. The little store took really good care of us, we had lots of food.
We left Wednesday from Kennedy Meadows and headed into the Sierras. That morning there was lightning, hail, and rain. By afternoon it was snowing, several inches covered the ground. About 3pm we set up our tent and spent rest of day trying to get warm and dry.
Thursday morning was spent trying to dry out all the gear since it rained and snowed all night. Thursday was another cold night. Friday was spent hiking in below freezing weather. The water in my bladder tube was frozen before I had a chance to drink it. Friday night it started snowing, a quarter of inch of fresh snow covered ground. Due to cold weather and significant snow weather alerts for the Sierra???s, we decided to come out in Lone Pine to rest. We met a few people who hiked further than we did on the trial. They said it was very hard to find the trial and the snow was pretty deep.
We spent two nights in Lone Pine. At this point we have decided we will skip the Sierra???s due to snow levels. We also do not have gear for cold weather, and do not want to buy it. Andrew and I are heading to Lake Tahoe by bus, to hike the Tahoe rim trail, which is 165 miles long. Tomorrow morning (6/8) we will head up to Tahoe. Then we will spend a few days in Reno, skip up to Ashland and start the Oregon section of the trail.
