The last day out!

October 6, 2014, ridge above Girard rd to Interstate 5, 14 miles

I got up and out of camp psyched to crank through the morning and maybe early afternoon to get out to Dunsmuir. I was ready to be done. I had a mile or so of up then hours of slow downhill to the highway. Again, warm and cloudless skies. Thankfully I was in the trees most of the time, a beautiful softly padded pine needled woods walk most of the time.
I popped out of the woods with signs saying that I had been in Castle Crags State Park, unbeknownst to me. I was spit out onto a road with no obvious signs as to where the PCT continued on to the other side of I-5. I went under the highway and realized I was in a rather odd spot, north and southbound on and off ramps and one minor road that I had just come from. I knew I had to go about 5 miles up I-5 to get to Dunsmuir and the car. The Dunsmuir Lodge was on voicemail and as I was digging through my pack at the side of the road for my next phone number a car came up to the on ramp and I instinctively if half-heartedly stuck out my thumb. The small car quickly came to a halt and he driver popped out and started making room for me in he back seat before I had much time to react! Two local ladies who were used to hikers, just helping out another. They had me up tongue next exit in minutes and a few more and I was in my car heading for latte in booming downtown Dunsmuir.
I had a fine brunch and headed up I-5 to home!
