On our way to Africa and Kilimanjaro
We are starting our journey to Africa with the goal of summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro! This trip will be quite different from our other long trail hikes. First of all, it is short. The distance is only 40.8 miles, but it has a whopping 16,758 feet of elevation gain, and a maximum elevation of 19,341 feet - the tallest on the African continent. We will be going slow, trying to acclimate to the elevation. We will summit on the morning of the seventh day of the hike, and then immediately start down, and then finish on Day 8.
Although this is supposed to be the dry season, we expect both rain at the bottom and snow at the upper elevations. At least the good news is that we will have porters, so we only have to carry the winter gear we wear, and the personal items and water we need during the day. This will be a very different trip!
