Pacific Crest Trail Map

northern cal

Hello to those of you following my journey. Things have changed and, in a sense, improved sense leaving the snow behind. The last snow we had to deal with was hiking the section into Sierra City. Thankfully, the amount was small and relatively inconsequential. I know that many of my fellow hikers have endured much more of the white stuff than I have, but I had my fill.
We are now following A Trail. Hurray! We're making good mileage, Jean Michel, Ron (Burning Daylight), and myself. We had a great time in Sierra City, good food, nice people, and the apartment above the restaurant before Trail Angel rental kicked in.
Belden, too, was interesting, at the tail end of the music festival. Tiny town. People were nice. I didn't encounter alcoholics and drug users as I was led to believe by previous hikers comments, though I expect there are a few illegal farmers in the area, ie. the kind who grow their crops up in the woods. We met the Braattens, and they were great. They put up and fed 11 of us.
We've spent a night in Chester. The restaurant with the 24 oz steaks may be out of business. Now we're on to Drakesbad, Old Station, and Burney Falls. Northern California hiking has been beautiful, but encumbered with a lot of post-winter debris and blow down. The hills are lower and the water usually more plentiful with some definite exceptions. Don't count on seasonal springs. They're often running dry. Past the halfway point, it's onward to Oregon.

I'll have a new verse to my PCT'r (Mr Tambourine Man) song soon.
Good hiking and thanks.

Rob
